An international pianist, piano teacher, and music theory tutor, Alice’s enthusiasm for all things music is infectious.

“I believe that music is a gift from God.  Music can nourish the soul and uplift our spirits. I find personal satisfaction from playing the piano personally as it is so relaxing and a wonderful stress relief.  I like to share this ability with others who want to play the piano and create their own music.”  Alice Letts

Alice teaches music theory classes and piano lessons in the village of Belper and  the city of Derby, England.  As well as online worldwide.  She also runs Ultimate Music Theory club camps during the summer in Rotorua, New Zealand.

She teaches all ages.  From the early years, ages 3 and above, up to adult beginners and intermediate players.

INFLUENCES AND TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

  • Dalcroze Eurythmics (using movement to understand rhythm)
  • The Kodály Approach, relative solfa and handsigns (learning through experience and singing)
  • The Orff Approach (rhythm & percussion)
  • Alexander Technique (healthy body posture)
  • The Grindea Technique (healthy piano technique)
  • Simultaneous learning (refer to Paul Harris map and his YouTube video on Simulataneous learning).

APPROACH TO MUSIC TEACHING

At Letts Music School we follow a 5 step process to teaching any new piece of music to students:-

STEP 1 – Listen;
STEP 2 – Sing (speak or hum etc);
STEP 3 – Improvise (create the rhythm by movement, clapping, waving your arms, stomping your feet, dancing, or using any percussion instruments etc);
STEP 4 – Read the music and play; and
STEP 5 – Write your own musical composition.

Teacher Profile

  • Alice teaches individual piano lessons to all ages.  This is a great opportunity for those adults who learnt the piano as children but have now forgotten everything, to come back for lessons again to freshen up their skills and get back to the level they used to be able to play at …. and to go beyond!
  • Alice also teaches group music theory classes for all ages.
  • For babies and toddlers, she runs  Zumbini®  group classes, incorporating music and dance (ages 0 – 4 years).
  • Progressing on from this, children aged four and above may choose to begin preschool piano lessons, where they build on their musicality, dalcroze and solfege, as they are introduced to music theory and how to play the piano.  They follow preschool programmes from Wunderkeys, and Dogs & Birds Programme.
  • Subsequently progressing onto the ABRSM syllabus for Prep level, Initial Exam, continuing with the Graded Exams from Grades 1 and beyond.
